Disney is currently in the process of making a live action remake of Snow White. In this, there are several changes to the plot. For example, the seven dwarves have been removed. Their cast also now introduces people of color.

The Seven Dwarves

Names of the Dwarves which were not previously included in the 1937 film were:

● Awful
● Dirty
● Lazy
● Flabby
● Tearful
● Shifty

Recently, Disney has begun to be named as 'Woke'; this means to be alert to discrimination, and hyper-aware of social issues. It also means to be progressive left-wing, and to be aware of gender identification.

Plot

In Snow White, the Queen is jealous of Snow White's looks. As a result of this, she attempts to murder Snow White, and does so by disguising herself and giving her a poisoned apple, which she believed to be normal and genuine; Snow White later dies. Before the Queen does this, the dwarves find Snow White and grow to love her. Once they find her dead, they put her in a glass coffin and mourn her. Later on, a prince who also fell in love with Snow White find her in this state and awakens her with love's first kiss.

The film uses stereotypes in which a women is portrayed to be helpless and weak, and is needed to be saved by a strong, handsome man. It also raises an issue to do with consent, as Snow White did not give consent to be kissed by the prince.

Industry

Steamboat Willie: Black and white picture, bad sound quality, limited dialogue.

Snow White: Colored picture, good sound quality, extensive dialogue.

Key Themes and Takeaways

Snow White is a hugely important film to the Disney Company and the Film Industry generally. Disney was in trouble and everyone thought it was a mad idea; they called it Disney's folly.

BTW Representations • Older women wore more simple clothing • Some of the younger women wore German traditional dress potentially to make links to the Nazi regime / ideology / authority • The residents appear to wear more simple traditional clothing which contrast with the visitors formal attire • Studio lighting creating 3 point lighting which produces multiple shadows creates a more sinister feel. • Rural setting that is isolated and idyllic • Bright colourful houses • It juxtaposes the reality of the village which is sinister and violent • Linked to Trumpton • They all behave in a similar way reinforcing the idea nobody challenges the ideology • They look to the camera in the waving scene, they know what they are doing and don't care • There are binary positions in the video, the men do all of the manual labour while the women bake and are the sacrifice Camera Work • Works to create a sense of mystery before revealing the reality • Medium shots which then zoom out to leg shot /

Diversity and The Remakes The film industry has been accused of lacking diversity, with it being too white, too male, too straight, too American etcetera. Only two women have ever won the Oscar for 'best director'; they are Kathryn Biyelow and Chloe Zhao. Chloe Zhao went on to direct The Eternals. It is certainly the case that for many years the film industry just did what it wanted - because it could. Harvey Weinstein was a director and producer that participated in negative and illegal activities; he committed sexual assault in 2020, and was called out for this by Jennifer Lawrence.
