Radio One

Radio One

Radio is one of the key areas we will study for the exam. It is worth 15 marks.

We need to know how the radio industry works, and we need to know the format of Greg James' show.

BBC: The British Broadcasting Corporation

Mission statement

'Inform, Educate, Entertain'

'In the public interest'

'Impartial' - Not biased, the BBC has recently been accused of being left-leaning (labour)

Public Service Broadcaster

1. The BBC has additional roles such as an emergency broadcast system.
2. They provide news.
3. Party political broadcasts with designated time slots (impartial).
4. World service (global influence, lead exporter of entertainment formats*).
5. Significant cultural events (sports events, etcetera).
6. Covid-19 reports.

*Inbetweeners, The Office, Top Gear (for example).

License Fees

It is not controlled by the government and is paid for by us via the TV license fee; most of us pay £159 per year, going up to £169 in April 2024.

If you want to watch TV or listen to radio, then you must pay a license fee each year - numerous payment options are available to ensure it is affordable for all.

A black and white TV license is less expensive at £53.50.

If you are found not to have a TV license then you could face prosecution.

The BBC are adapting to consumer habits.

Doctor Who

Disney and the BBC are working together on Doctor Who to make it more global. This is due to the BBC modernising and adapting to competing streaming services.

The British public may not like this move as fans tend to gatekeep media content from others; the show is going from an exclusively British show, to a joint British-American show. Fans may not like the idea that Disney has creative control.

Tradition vs modernity

The BBC must play highly influential breaking news on top of their radio stations in order to announce it.

Radio 1's place as a PSB

Radio 1's remit is to entertain young listeners with a distinctive mix of contemporary music and speech. Its target audience is 15-29 year olds.

If they lose a member of Radio 1, they can just feed into another radio station, such as Radio 2.

They broadcast at least 40 new documentaries each year to inform and educate.

The Radio 1 Playlist

The music on the show is largely playlisted, which is going to be played on daytime Radio 1, and is decided by a committee.

Radio 1 choose around 40 records each week for repeated daytime play. A-list records get 25 plays a week, B-list get 15 and C-list get 8-10.

Choices are partly guided by what's already popular with young people online.

The current Head of Music has been trying to get away from the data-driven approach to choosing what will get played.
