The relationship between the USSR and the US was tense. The idea of nuclear war became a reality due to the arms race, in which each country produced large amount of weapons such as missiles and nuclear bombs.

Characters

Mike is a blank state protagonist, is loyal, and likes to play Dungeons and Dragons.

Will is a nerd, is loyal, is foreshadowed to be gay, and is missing.

Joyce is Wills mum, is protective, is working class, is resourceful, and is determined.

Eleven has telekinesis (a story promise), is non-verbal, has come from a testing facility, and is resourceful.

Hopper

Dustin
 is comic relief, and illustrates a theme of friendship.

Johnathan is Wills brother, is a social outcast, and works whilst in school.

Steve is a jock, is arrogant, and is in love with Nancy
