LFTVD Trial Exam Preparation – Q3

Audiences

1. Teens, people who grew up in the 80s to allow ST to provide a sense of nostalgia. Use of hybrid-genre, relating to Neale's theory of repetition. Targets younger generation.
2. Lupin has an audience of French adults through its nature of the crime/mystery genre, which is popular with this age group. It was released during the pandemic when everyone was stuck at home due to lockdown, meaning that the show had a wider audience than anticipated. The show will be more appealing to those who are young and more socially conscious. It appeals more to French nationals due to the fact that Omar Sy was casted to plan the main role, Assane Diop, who is from Senegal which used to be a colony of France. The audience of the show is international due to the fact that dubs and subtitles are offered to fit the language of the region it is being played in.
3. Stranger Things offers intertextual references to Suburbian/Spielbergian America and 80s classics to provide a sense of nostalgia to its audience, while Lupin gives intertextual references to the French revolution and the effects that it has had on France to this day.
4. The audience of Stranger Things will only know about references related to what they have gone through previously, and will know less about French history, due to their typical European/American culture.

Paragraph structure

Intro

Reverse the question, agree/disagree.

I partially agree that the differences in codes and conventions in long form television dramas reflect the values and beliefs of the audience. On one hand, codes and conventions are used by media products to target their respective audiences. However, some producers may use different codes and conventions to challenge their audience and subvert their expectations.

Paragraph 1: Context - production

Economically, streaming services are increasingly popular.

280 million subscribers for Netflix, 153 million for Disney+

Watching habits changed, from binging to two part releases.

Big companies outsource production - authentic representation.

Hesmondhalgh - repeat narratives and genres to reduce risk eg. Star Wars.

Even original products rely on intertextuality or repeated genres, stars etc.

Ultimately, global conglomerates have control of codes and conventions.
