2:18 - 2:42
In this timeframe age, ethnicity and gender are all being represented, through the child on the stairs, the man in the house, and the woman at the doorstep.
Through the shot of the child on the stairs, Emile Sande represents youth and potentially immigrants, and the life that they live which reflects the reality of living in Bethnal Green. In the shot, the child has a sad expression which creates the representation that the youth are not given freedom and are forced to grow up without opportunities or help. Furthermore, the shot type of a medium shot allows us to see the emotions on the child's face and his surroundings, in which it can be inferred that he is living and spending his childhood in poverty, through the gloomy colour palette used in the shot. This representation shows that Emile Sande is socially conscious.
Through the shot of the man in the house, Emile Sande once again represents youth and the fact that they have little money to live with. This is shown by the man smoking something (either tobacco or a drug!) which is usually done as a stress reliever or to help them get by, and forget about their problems. It can be inferred that he is smoking due to his finances and poor living situation, as seen by the use of a medium shot, which allows his emotions and his living situation to be seen. The lack of bright colours in the shot show that the house isn't the nicest, and is unsuitable. Furthermore, the shot shows his emotions to show that he is unhappy with himself. This representation of youth once again shows that Emile Sande is socially conscious.
Very briefly Emile Sande creates a representation of gender, specifically women, through the shot of the women posing in the doorstep. She represents women to be be objectified and sexualised through the woman's pose, in which she poses suggestively in the shot with revealing clothing. To add to this, the woman's face is not shown, which suggests that the body of women is the only thing that is important.
3:29 - 4:15
In this timeframe Emile Sande once again represents age and ethnicity.
Through the shot of the woman sitting on the kerb, Emile Sande offer a representation of youth, and that they are lost and have nowhere to turn to. This is shown by the high-angle shot of the woman on the kerb, which shows her powerlessness and weakness, suggesting that she is at a loss. By sitting on the kerb and staring into the distance, the woman is shown to be lost with little opportunities lying ahead of her. This representation shows the lack of freedom and opportunities young people have in low income areas such as Bethnal Green.
The shot of the man in the street offers a representation of the effects of poverty in low income areas such as Bethnal Green. This is shown by the actions of the man in the shot, who appears to be on certain substances, which people take when they have opportunities and have given up on themselves. The medium shot of the man shows him to be holding his hands up in a praying manor, as if he is longing for freedom or help from somebody. His actions in the shot represent the fact that people with low income have limited opportunities and are forced to suffer as a result, typically receiving no help from others. Through this representation, Emile Sande is once more shown to be socially conscious.
Finally, ethnicity is represented through the shot of the children standing outside facing the camera, and are shown to be sad, suggesting that they receive discrimination, or that their living conditions are not good. This is through the long shot of the estate, which appears to be rundown, and the facial expressions of the children; they are sad and distraught. This offers a representation to the audience that people of colour experience worse lives than many due to their race, and face difficulties in their life such as living in a run down estate as a consequence; discrimination?
