LFTVD Question 4 Revision

Gerbner - Cultivation

Argues that regulation is important.

The idea that repeated and prolonged messages in media products allows audiences to construct their own views and beliefs around them.

The more people watch TV, the more likely they are to have a negative view of the world - this is known as 'mean world syndrome'.

This is most of the messages shown on TV are negative, such as global conflicts, tariffs, etc.

People that consume a lot of TV content are likely to have similar views - mainstreaming.

Stranger Things: Idea that the government is hiding things from the people and abusing their authority, as shown by the references to MKUltra & the lab. Ideas of gender are conflicting, with some showing women to be domestic, and some showing women to subvert typical stereotypes. Ideas that children are not safe.

Lupin: Idea that the rise of the far-right is negative, and that immigrants are mistreated and considered less powerful in society than white people. This is shown by the Banleius, reflecting mean world syndrome, which suggests there is criminal activity in French suburbs.

Evaluation

LFTVD is too long and complex to conform to the mainstream. Furthermore, the theory doesn't take into account the power of audiences, and their ability to react in different ways to the messages they are given by producers.
